Mostar becomes the center of puppetry in Southeast Europe

The Mostar Puppet Theatre has launched the pilot project “Creative Bridge” – an ambitious regional initiative aimed at connecting the puppetry scene in Southeastern Europe. The project is the result of a Memorandum of Cooperation signed in Plovdiv in early 2026.

The pilot project “Creative Bridge” brings together puppeteers from five countries

In the first phase of the project, twenty puppeteers from five countries – Bulgaria, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina – are staying in Mostar from June 29 to July 5. Mentored by renowned professor Kata Csato from Hungary, participants explore the theme of abstract thinking in puppetry.

The project brings together the leading puppetry institutions of the region: “Nikolaj Binev” Youth Theater from Sofia and Yambol State Puppet Theater from Bulgaria, Ljubljana Puppet Theater from Slovenia, Kragujevac Children and Youth Theater from Serbia, Rijeka City Puppet Theater from Croatia, and Sarajevo Youth Theater and Mostar Puppet Theaters from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The vision of the project extends beyond this first workshop – “Creative Bridge” is conceived as a traveling academy of puppetry which in the following stages would cover all 13 countries of Southeast Europe, including Romania, Moldova, Turkey, Greece, Hungary, Albania, North Macedonia and Montenegro.

The organizers invite all puppeteers from the region to actively participate in this unique initiative.

The implementation of the project was supported by the Government and Assembly of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the HNK, the City of Mostar and the HNK Tourist Board.
